Hoffman shines in pitchers’ duel in game one

HOUSTON – Houston Baseball lost both games of a doubleheader to Cincinnati, falling 3-2 in a pitcher's duel in game one before the Bearcats surged to an 8-1 win in the nightcap on Saturday at Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.

GAME ONE – CINCINNATI 3, HOUSTON 2
Despite taking the loss, sophomore Kendall Hoffman (2-6) tossed a gem on the mound for the Cougars in the first game of the day. In the longest outing of his career by both innings (8.1) and pitches (131), the Seminole, Fla., native faced 36 batters and allowed just two earned runs in his third quality start of the year. He also struck out five, bringing his season total to 46.

Nathan Taylor (5-2) claimed the win, working 7.0 innings while allowing eight hits and two runs with 11 strikeouts. Adam Buczkowski (4) earned the save, throwing the final two frames for Cincinnati and allowing just two baserunners.

GAME SUMMARY
Cincinnati struck first, scoring a run on a Houston fielding error to grab an early lead. The Bearcats added another pair of runs in the top of the second as four hits plated two, pushing the lead to three.

Houston answered in the fifth. Sophomore McClane Helton singled to start the inning and reached second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Riley Jackson. LaLima laced a single through the right side that allowed Helton to score, putting Houston on the board and cutting the deficit to two.

The Cougars added another in the sixth as senior Antonelli Savattere singled home Climie, but the comeback effort came up short as Cincinnati closed the door on a 3-2 win.

GAME TWO – CINCINNATI 8, HOUSTON 1
Senior Paul Schmitz (2-6) took the loss in game two, allowing five runs over 3.2 innings. Connor Blue (4-0) earned the win with six innings of work, surrendering four hits and one run.

Savattere notched his 20^th RBI of the year.

GAME SUMMARY
The teams remained scoreless through two innings before the Bearcats started the scoring with a run on a sacrifice fly in the third. Cincinnati added four more in the fourth with a homer and four singles.

Houston got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth as Savattere picked up his second RBI of the day with a single that scored Climie.

The Bearcats pawed back with a pair of runs in the fifth and one run in the seventh to cap the scoring and clinch the series win with an 8-1 victory.

Houston closes the series against Cincinnati at 1 p.m. Sunday.
