Cougars fall in opening tilt to #22 Arizona State

HOUSTON – Despite a pair of homers from seniors Carsten Sabathia III and Dylan Maxcey, Houston Baseball fell in the first game of the series to #22 Arizona State, 4-3, on Thursday night at Schroeder Park.

Senior Ryne Rodriguez (2-2) suffered the loss for Houston (23-30, 6-22 Big 12), allowing two runs in 0.2 innings. Taylor Penn (5-0) secured the win with 2.0 innings in relief while Derek Schaefer (8) earned the save for Arizona State (35-17, 18-10 Big 12).

Senior Antonelli Savattere pushed his hitting streak to 10 games, his first double-digit streak of his career.

GAME SUMMARY
Arizona State claimed the first lead of the game with a run in the top of the first, then added to its advantage with another in the third.

Houston answered in the fifth as Maxcey hit his third homer of the season that also drove home freshman Blake Fields. The Cougars then took the lead as Sabathia III homered in the seventh to give Houston a 3-2 edge.

The Sun Devils reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs in the eighth on a double and an error, securing a 4-3 victory.
