Houston Capitalizes on Opportunities to Down McNeese

HOUSTON – Behind a 3-for-3 day at the plate from freshman Brooke Wells, the University of Houston Softball team scored in four innings, including a five-run second, to defeat McNeese, 10-6, at Cougar Softball Stadium on Tuesday night.

Pitching in relief, redshirt junior Paris Lehman (2-4) secured the win for Houston (18-11) by tossing two innings and allowing one run on three hits. Freshman Maddie Hartley (2) picked up her second save, throwing 1.2 hitless and shutout innings. Kadence Williams (5-5) suffered the loss for McNeese (21-14), ceding five runs on five hits and a walk.

Entering the season never winning by a score of 10-6, Houston has now won by this score twice in the last eight days.

Wells and sophomore Jordee Wilkins both reached base in their ninth consecutive games. Wilkins' streak is her longest of the season.
Houston hit its 12^th sacrifice fly of the year while also turning its 10^th double play of the season.

Wilkins posted her eighth multi-hit game and fifth multi-RBI game of the season.

With two swipes in the game, freshman Madox Mitchael recorded her second career multi-stolen base game. It brings her season total to 11.

Key Innings
1^st | McNeese took the first lead of the game with a pair of doubles plating a run in the top of the first. After stealing third, another Cowgirl crossed home on a groundout to put the Cowgirls ahead, 2-0.

Houston got on the board in the bottom half of the frame as Wilkins hit her third homer of the year, a solo shot to left field to cut the deficit to one.

2^nd | The Cougars claimed the lead in the second. Mitchael drew a leadoff walk and then stole second, later scoring as Redmond singled through the right side to even the game at 2-2. Following a single from sophomore Kayley Prudhomme that put runners on first and second, Wilkins doubled home Redmond to give Houston the lead.

A sac-fly off the bat of freshman Isabel Cintron plated Prudhomme while a single off the bat of junior Mandy Esman allowed Wilkins to score. Wells capped the scoring in the inning as she singled and forced an error that allowed Esman to score, putting Houston up 6-2.

5^th | After McNeese scored a run to cut their deficit to three in the third, a solo homer from Jada Munoz put the Cowgirls within two.

Houston pushed its lead to five in the home half. Redmond drew a bases-loaded walk to force home freshman Emilee Prochaska while a pop-fly from Prudhomme caused an error that allowed Mitchael and Hartley to score, making the score 9-4.

6^th | A solo homer again cut into Houston's lead in the top half, followed by a bases-loaded walk that scored a second run to put McNeese within three.

Houston again answered in the bottom of the inning. After Esman reached on an error, Wells tripled to right to allow the Kalamazoo, Mich., native to score, finalizing the scoring at 10-6.

UP NEXT
Houston heads back on the road, traveling to the Beehive State for a three-game series against Utah starting on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
