Mitchell tallies 50th hit of the season; Houston falls in run-rule loss at Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Houston Softball team fell in its Big 12 weekend series opener, 9-1, against #20 Arizona at Hillenbrand Stadium on Friday.

The Cougars (20-29, 3-19 Big 12) collected six hits on the night led by a pair from junior Makenna Mitchell. The Wildcats (32-13, 13-6 Big 12) took the lead early with back-to-back multi-run frames in the first and second, pulling away with four in the fourth to take the run rule win.

Mitchell tallied her 50^th hit of the season on her 150^th at bat of the year, lining a single up the middle in the top of the first inning.
Mitchell cranked her 18^th homer of the season, propelling her to fourth place in single-season home runs in program history.
Mitchell's pair of hits marked her 17^th multi-hit outing of the season.
Sophomore Ariel Redmond extended her hit streak to four games with a leadoff single in the first.

KEY INNINGS
3^rd | Following a grounder to lead off the third, Mitchell belted her 18^th homer of the season with a deep shot to center field, cutting the deficit to 5-1.

Houston returns for game two against #20 Arizona with first pitch set for 5 p.m., Saturday. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
