Houston secures run-rule win against Kansas City, falls to host McNeese in nightcap

GAME ONE – HOUSTON 11, KANSAS CITY 3 (5 INN.)
Picking up the win in Houston's first run-rule victory of the year, redshirt junior Paris Lehman (1-1) spun 1.2 innings in relief, allowing no runs on one hit and no walks while striking out one. Maddy Duval (0-3) took the loss for Kansas City (0-6), ceding five runs on seven hits and two walks.Â

2nd | Houston opened the scoring in the second. Three straight singles from sophomore Mikalah Nitta, junior Gabby Rawls and freshman Emilee Prochaska gave sophomore Reece Cammarn a chance with the bases loaded and no one out. The catcher drew a walk to put the Cougars on the board, and Hartley followed it up two batters later with a two-RBI single up the middle. Freshman Madox Mitchael capped the scoring in the inning with a sac-fly that scored Cammarn to give Houston a 4-0 lead.Â

Kansas City cut into the lead in its half of the inning. A double off the bat of Chloe Kohnhorst plated a run with Kohrnhorst later scoring herself on a single to cut the deficit to 4-2.

4th | After scoring a run in the third, Houston put the game in run-rule territory in the fourth. With a pair of runners in scoring position, Mitchael grounded a run home to push the lead to three. After Mitchell reached on a hit-by-pitch, freshman Brooke Wells laced a two-RBI triple to centerfield and then later scored on a single from freshman Ariel Redmond.

Cammarn picked up her second RBI of the game with a single up the middle, plating Nitta, while sophomore Jordee Wilkins used Houston's second sac fly of the day to make the score 11-2.

The Roos threatened in the fifth, but only managed a run allowing Houston to secure the 11-3, run-rule victory in five innings.Â

GAME TWO – McNEESE 6, HOUSTON 2
Maddie Taylor (4-1) picked up the victory for McNeese (8-4) by twirling four shutout innings, allowing only three hits and a walk. Nicole Bodeux (0-1) received the decision for the Cougar after giving up four unearned runs in the sixth inning.Â

KEY INNINGS
1st | With runners on the corners via a single and a pair of McNeese errors, Wells put Houston on the board early with a sac fly to centerfield.Â

3rd | Still holding a one-run lead, the Cougars added another to the tally in the third. With runners on the corners again, Rawls' single allowed Wells to cross, scoring the freshman's 11th run of the season.

6th | With two outs in the home half of the sixth, McNeese strung together a rally to take the lead. An error and back-to-back singles loaded the bases for the Cowgirls and Onna McElroy capitalized, sending a grand slam over the right-field fence to put McNeese up, 4-2.Â

The Cowgirls continued their two-out rally with a single followed by a double from Kassidy Chance that plated the runner to extend McNeese's lead to three. Chance, having advanced to third on an error, then scored on an infield single to finalize the scoring, giving McNeese a 6-2 win.Â

UP NEXT
Houston continues its road trip, heading east to Lafayette, La., to play in the Ragin' Cajun Invitational II. The Cougars battle Louisiana (1 p.m.) and Kansas City (7 p.m.) on Saturday before clashing with Louisiana in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
