Houston closes weekend with last-inning heroics against Cardinals
Down 6-0 heading into the last frame, Houston (8-2) launched a seven-run seventh inning to seal a one-run win against UIW (4-6).
Freshman Brooke Wells, who started the game at first base, picked up her first career win in her career debut in the circle. She spun the last inning for Houston, sitting the Cardinals down in order while picking up a strikeout in the seventh. Bella Mitchell took the loss for UIW, ceding the decisive run in the contest.

Key Innings
1st | After a lead-off walk to open the game, a triple off the bat of Jillian Gutierrez put UIW on the board. Following another walk that put runners on the corners, Jasmine Sierra put the Cardinals up by four with a three-run homer to left field.
6th | After adding another run by capitalizing on defensive miscues in the second, the Cardinals further extended their lead with a run in the sixth. A walk and stolen base put a runner on second that came around to score on a single to left field, putting UIW up 6-0.
7th | Houston rallied for the win in the seventh. Prudhomme and Wilkins reached to start the inning and Hartley started the scoring with a three-run homer to center field. After a ground out, Wells and sophomore Mikalah Nitta singled while sophomore Bethany Aguilar drew a walk to load the bases. M. Mitchell got Houston within one with a two-run double down the left-field line while Prudhomme forced a game-winning error, slipping a ball through the shortstop that allowed two runs to score and gave the Cougars a 7-6 win.

Houston caps an 11-game homestand with its first midweek tilt of the season as Lamar visits Cougar Softball Stadium on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
