Cougars sweep Silver Glove Series for third consecutive season

The Cougars (23-29) won two of the three games in run-rule fashion this season, outscoring the Owls (31-22) 31-7 over the course of the series. Houston has won the last nine games against Rice while also claiming the last five Silver Glove Series titles.Â

In a bullpen game for Houston, junior Alex Solis (3-2) earned the win, tossing 2.0 one-hit innings while striking out two while facing just one batter over the minimum. Jeremiah Arnett (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on three hits in 0.1 innings on the mound.Â

GAME SUMMARY
Houston pounced in the game's opening frame. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for the Cougars and redshirt sophomore Xavier Perez broke open the scoring with a two-RBI double to left-center. Junior Riley Jackson immediately followed with his own double, driving in another run.Â

Senior Carsten Sabathia III and freshman Blake Fields drew back-to-back walks to reload the bases and force home Houston's fourth run of the game. Two batters later, Cox added another pair of runs to the tally with a single to right-center, then then advanced to second on a Rice error during a stolen base attempt, allowing Fields to score, making the score 7-0. After Broussard singled home Cox and stole third, another Rice error allowed him to score, giving Houston a 9-0 lead.

After Cox drove home another two runs in the second and Fields picked up an RBI in the third, Rice answered with three unearned runs in the fourth to break up the shutout. Two more bases-loaded walks in the bottom of the inning capped the scoring capped the scoring in the game, allowing the Cougars to cruise to a 14-3 win.Â

UP NEXT
Houston hosts its final series of the season this weekend at Schroeder Park as #22 Arizona State visits the Bayou City. The three-game slate kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and continues at 6:30 p.m. Friday before concluding at 1 p.m. Saturday.
