Gasser becomes second Cougar to hoist Commissioners Trophy
HOUSTON – Houston Baseball alumnus Robert Gasser and the Brewers are World Series Champions. Gasser, who played at Houston from 2020-21, becomes the second Cougar to win the World Series, joining 2002 World Series Champion Ben Weber.Â
Â
The fifth Cougar to play in the World Series, Gasser threw six shutout innings in Game 3, allowing just one hit while facing the minimum and striking out three. Along with being the first Houston Baseball legend to earn a win on the mound in the Fall Classic, he was just the second player in World Series history to finish a start of at least 6.0 innings and face the minimum number of batters, per OptaSTATS. The other was Don Larsen in his 1956 perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was also the first lefty to face the minimum through six innings since Sandy Koufax in 1965, although Koufax went on to allow a runner in the seventh and ninth in his complete-game shutout in the 7-0 Game Five win on Oct. 11, 1965.
Â
Gasser is the ninth pitcher to deal at least 6.0 scoreless innings in the Fall Classic while permitting one-or-zero hits and the first since Houston's Cristian Javier tossed 6.0 no-hit innings in Game 4 of the 2022 World Series. Overall, he's the 11th pitcher to face the minimum through six innings in a World Series start and the first since Curt Schilling in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. Gasser is the only rookie starter in MLB history to throw 6.0 innings in the start and allow one-or-zero hits.Â
Â
The dominance for Gasser didn't start in the Fall Classic. The southpaw has been fully fueled for each of his three postseason starts, recording 15.0 innings on the mound while allowing seven hits and only one run for a 0.60 ERA. He's also struck out nine batters and ceded just three walks.Â
Â
This is Gasser's second season making postseason appearances, appearing in both the NLDS and NLCS last season. The lefty is still considered a rookie this season, despite also making major league appearances in 2024 and 2025 since he did not throw 50 innings or remain on the major league roster for more than 45 days.Â
Â
Starting the season with Triple-A Nashville, Gasser was called up to the Brewers permanently on July 11 after he had previously been recalled three times before starting on May 17. He finished his rookie campaign with a 5-5 record, throwing 109.1 innings with a 3.87 ERA and earning 103 strikeouts.Â
Â
Gasser was drafted by San Diego in the 2021 Draft during the Competitive Balance B phase between the second and third rounds and was traded to Milwaukee on Aug. 1, 2022. He played for Houston for two seasons and was one of the top draft-eligible pitchers in the 2021 season. A 2021 First-Team All-AAC selection, he was the league's second-best draft prospect per D1Baseball and was a Top 15 draft-eligible pitcher per The Athletic's Keith Law.Â
Â
In his final collegiate season, he posted a 6-6 record with a 2.63 ERA in 85.2 innings. He became the ninth Cougar to strike out 100+ batters in a season and won Houston's 20th pitching triple crown.Â
Â
Gasser was the fifth Cougar to play in the World Series, entering a club that includes Bill Henry, Tom Paciorek, Weber and Woody Williams. He was the first since Williams and the Cardinals played in the 2004 series.Â
