Houston drops opener before rebounding to win nightcap and advance to Birds Up Bash Championship game
Houston (13-5) will play rv Boise State for the tournament title on Sunday at 1 p.m.
GAME ONE – UTSA 5, Houston 4
Freshman Rylee Michalak (2-1) suffered the loss for the Cougars in the circle, allowing five runs on four hits and a walk. Kaylie Olivarez (3-1) earned the victory, spinning 4.2 shutout innings.

Key Innings
1st | UTSA jumped out to a quick lead in the first. Back-to-back singles put a pair of runners on and both were driven home on a double from Kalee Rochinski. After another Roadrunner reached base on a walk, Katia Reyes hit a three-run homer to left field, putting UTSA up 5-0.
5th | Houston got on the board in the fifth. With sophomore Makenna Mitchell on first, Wells hit a double to right field that allowed Mitchell to score. After freshman Madox Mitchael pinch ran for Wells, Redmond drove her home with a single to center to make the score 5-2.
7th | The Cougars nearly completed the comeback in the seventh. With a runner on first, Wells crushed a two-run homer to right field that brought Houston within one. A single from Redmond and double off the bat of sophomore Jordee Wilkins put a pair of runners in scoring position, but the Roadrunners shut the door on Houston's comeback hopes, sealing a 5-4 win.
GAME TWO – HOUSTON 3, UTSA 2
Sophomore Gigi Solis secured a complete-game victory in the circle for the Cougars. The Pearland, Texas, native allowed just two runs on seven hits while striking out three. Madison Collins (0-3) took the loss, ceding two runs on three hits and three walks.

- The Cougars have won by a score of 3-2 34 times in program history, their third most common score ever.
- With five walks in the game, Houston has drawn 120 walks this season. With 29 games remaining, Houston has posted 60 percent of its 2024 total in just 18 games (38 percent of its 2025 schedule). The mark has already surpassed the season total from three of Houston's 24 complete seasons.
KEY INNINGS
3rd | UTSA grabbed the lead first in the game. With runners on first and second, a double down the left field line put the Roadrunners in front, 1-0.
4th | Houston quickly answered. Singles from Redmond and Mitchael and a walk from sophomore Kayley Prudhomme loaded the bases for the Cougars with two outs. A walk from freshman Maddie Hartley and Cintron getting hit by a pitch forced two runs across, giving Houston a 2-1 lead.
5th | The Cougars added another in the fifth. Two errors and a hit-by-pitch again loaded the bases for Houston and sophomore Bethany Aguilar singled to right field to drive home Mitchell, extending the Cougars' advantage to two.
The Roadrunners struck back in the home half. With runners on the corners, a single to left field made the score 3-2, but that's all UTSA would manage for the rest of the game, securing a 3-2 win for Houston.
UP NEXT
The Cougars close the weekend with the Birds Up Bash Championship Game on Sunday. The tilt against rv Boise State is scheduled for 1 p.m.
