Houston Drops Thriller Against UTRGV

Cougars return to action against Louisiana Tech at 11 a.m., Monday
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Tennis program dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker against UTRGV at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility on Friday afternoon.
In doubles, the Cougars (1-2) won all three courts to take the 1-0 advantage. The sophomore duo of Sophie Schouten and Sonya Kovalenko picked up their second win of the season as they defeated Lea Karren and Marjorie Souza, 6-1.
On court two, junior Maria Dzemeshkevich and senior Laura Slisane knocked off Kristal Dule and Yaiza Vazquez, 6-3, and senior Blanca Cortijo Parreno and sophomore Gabriela Cortes took down Isabelle Bahr and Valentina Urraco, 6-3.
Dzemeshkevich doubled the Cougars lead on court two as she took care of Karren, 6-1, 6-2.
The Vaqueros (3-1) responded on court six as Urraco defeated freshman Nina Skoric, 6-4, 6-3.
Schouten continued her undefeated streak on court three as she won both sets against Bahr, 6-4, 6-4.
Needing the remaining three points, UTRGV picked up its second point on court one as Souza defeated Slisane, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5. On court five, Dule took the final two sets to defeat Cortes, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Tied at three, all eyes were on court four as two of the three sets between Vazquez and Kovalenko needed the tiebreaker. The Vaqueros completed the comeback as Vazquez outlasted Kovalenko, 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).
UP NEXT
After its postponement due to anticipated inclement weather, Houston returns to action against Louisiana Tech at 11 a.m., Monday.
Following its weekend matches, Houston takes a week off before hosting UTSA on Friday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m., and UT Arlington on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 1 p.m.
Admission is free for all home Houston Tennis matches.
