PREVIEW: Houston Welcomes UTRGV and Louisiana Tech

Cougars face UTRGV at 1 p.m., Friday, and Louisiana Tech at 10 a.m., Saturday
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Tennis program welcomes UTRGV and Louisiana Tech to the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility beginning Friday.
The Cougars (1-1) face the Vaqueros (2-1) at 1 p.m., Friday, and the Bulldogs (5-2) at 10 a.m. Saturday. Admission is free for all home Houston Tennis matches.
Houston is led in singles by senior Laura Slisane on court one and sophomore Sophie Schouten on court three, who are undefeated on their respective courts.
UTRGV enters Friday's contest with back-to-back wins over St. Mary's and Our Lady of the Lake. The Vaqueros are led in singles by Kristal Dule with three wins and Isabelle Bahr with two.
Louisiana Tech comes in with a 5-2 record and has swept its last three opponents. Olga Bienzobas leads the Bulldogs with six singles wins followed by Alexia Romero with five.
LAST TIME OUT
Houston dropped a back-and-forth battle to North Texas, 4-3, in Denton, Texas, on Sunday.
After dropping the doubles point, Schouten answered back on court three as she defeated Lou Chalard, 6-1, 6-3, to tie the match at one.
The teams traded points when the Mean Green's Lily Shultz defeated senior Blanca Cortijo Parreno, 6-3, 6-4, on court six, but Slisane battled Stanislava Shulzhenko, 7-5, 6-1, on court one, and sophomore Sonya Kovalenko fell to Carolina Laydner, 4-6, 1-6, on court four.
Freshman Nina Skoric evened the match at three as she took the win on court five, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, to record her first collegiate win.
The match came down to the third set on court two, but North Texas' Stadfany Nformi outlasted junior Maria Dzemeshkevich, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, to claim the match for the Mean Green, 4-3.
SERIES VS UTRGV
Houston is 13-0 against UTRGV with the Cougars earning a 6-1 win in Waco, Texas (Jan. 22, 2023).
The Cougars took the doubles point behind a win from Slisane and Cortijo Parreno, and Schouten and junior Elena Trencheva.
Slisane, Cortijo Parreno, Schouten and Dzemeshkevich all picked up singles points against the Vaqueros in the previous meeting.
SERIES VS LOUISIANA TECH
The Cougars are 8-0 against Louisiana Tech with the last two meetings resulting in 4-0 Houston sweeps.
With the win against the Lady Techsters (March, 24, 2018), Houston won its 11th-straight match en route to a 12-0 start to the season, the best since 2006.
UP NEXT
Following its weekend matches, Houston takes a week off before hosting UTSA on Friday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m., and UT Arlington on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 1 p.m.
