Senior Azul Pedemonti picks up Houston’s lone point of match
WACO, Texas – The University of Houston Tennis program competed in Waco at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon, falling to future Big 12 Conference opponent rv Baylor, 6-1.
Houston (0-2) went into the match looking for its first win of the spring season, while Baylor (0-1) opened its spring season against the Cougars. Houston will have a new opportunity to pick up its first victory on Sunday at noon against UTRGV.
In doubles action, Houston dropped both matches against Baylor. On court two, Sonya Kovalenko and Laura Slisane dropped the match, 6-1, to the Bears' Alina Shcherbinina and Anita Sahdiieva, while Elena Trencheva and Sophie Schouten fell to Paula Barano and Daniella Dimitrov, 6-4, on court one.
The Cougars earned the lone point of the match when senior Azul Pedemonti defeated Baylor's Dimitrov on court four. The Concordia, Argentina, native completed her match with scores of 6-1, 6-4. On court five, freshman Sophie Schouten fell in the first set against the Bears' Barano, 7-6 but fought back winning the second set, 7-5. Barano ultimately clinched the fifth singles point for Baylor in the final set, 6-1.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will return to Houston to open their home schedule with a three-match home slate at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility against Elon at 10 a.m., on Friday, Jan. 27, Texas State at noon on Saturday, Jan. 28 and will close out the weekend against Louisiana Monroe at noon Sunday, Jan. 29. Admission is free.
