HOUSTON - A 13-hit game against UMass highlighted Day Two of the Hilton Houston Plaza Invitational as Houston Softball picked up two tough-fought wins.
The Cougars improved to 6-5 on the season.
The Houston offense racked up 19 hits in the two games including three extra base hits. Junior transfer Courtney Klingler led the charge as she went 3-for-5, tallied three RBIs and a home run.
Junior centerfielder Katie St. Pierre also had a top showing Saturday afternoon as she went 4-for-8, scored two runs and three stolen bases.
HOUSTON 5, UMASS 4 - BOX SCORE
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning off singles from Tiffani McKnight and Jaime Edwards. Houston was held scoreless through the third inning.
UMass took the lead (2-1) after plating two runs in the third and fourth innings. But Houston was relentless in its efforts as the Cougars regained the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
A lead off single to left field by freshman outfielder Kaylin Crumpton started the Cougars rally in the bottom of the fourth. Klingler followed with an RBI single, scoring Crumpton. With bases loaded, Kayla Holland batted a sacrifice fly into right field to plate Baldridge.
The rally didn't stop there. The Cougars hit two more singles to score another run pushing their lead to 4-2.
UMass fought back as the Minutewomen tied the game 4-4 off two base hits to shallow outfield.
In their last chance before the international tie-breaker rule came into effect, the Cougars plated the winning run on a walkoff single up the middle by Jaime Edwards. This game marked the second that finished in walk-off fashion for the Cougars. The last coming in the 6-5 win over Liberty during the Sand Dollar Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Starting pitcher Summer Groholski (1-1) received the no decision. In 5.0 innings pitched, she allowed three earned runs and two walks while striking out four. Sophomore transfer Shelby Miller (1-2) took the win after pitching two innings and allowing only one walk while striking out one batter.
HOUSTON 6, DePAUL 3 - BOX SCORE
During game two of the day, DePaul held Houston scoreless through four innings.
The Cougars turned on the switch when Crumpton doubled down the left field line. Klingler came in the clutch as she belted a two-run homer over the centerfield fence.
Down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Houston loaded the bases off two walks and a double. DePaul pitcher Maxine Rodriguez walked in two runs after hitting Crumpton with a ball and a four-ball walk to Klingler. A Megan Noel single up the middle plated two more runs securing Houston's lead.
Junior Julana Shrum (2-2) picked up the win for Houston after pitching a complete game, giving up only one earned run, four hits, and struck out six.
