SAN MARCOS, Texas - The University of Houston tennis team claimed its third-straight victory Sunday afternoon by edging Texas State by a score of 4-3 at Bobcat Tennis Complex. The Cougars improved to 9-6 overall while dropping the Bobcats to 10-3 on the season.
"I was thoroughly impressed with how we handled doubles today," head coach John Severance said. "We trailed early at the top two positions but they battled through it which made the difference in the match.
"In singles, Charlotte (Phillips) cleaned up her game a good bit and you can see how dominant she can be," Severance continued. "Bryony (Hunter) had a tough matchup but put it all together in the third set and Maja continues to be dominant."
The opening doubles point continued to prove vital in the Cougars' recent string of close matches, and Houston used victories at the top two positions to claim the crucial point.
Both duos of Giorgia Pozzan and Celia Fraser and Liselot Koenen and Laura Ring struggled early, falling behind 4-1 before claiming victories of 8-6. Pozzan and Fraser have now chalked up two wins in three matches together while Ring and Koenen improved to a dominant 7-1 mark this spring.
Charlotte Phillips opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Mariana Perez at the No. 4 position while Texas State's Jessica Kahts cut Houston's lead in half with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Pozzan at the top spot to give the senior only her fourth loss this season.
Maja Kazimieruk put the Cougars on the verge of clinching the match with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Berenice Van Den Bergh at the No. 6 spot for her sixth-straight win to improve to 11-3 on the year, while Hunter prevailed with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 victory over Rachel Baldree at the No. 3 position to clinch the match for the Cougars.
Houston returns to action to play host to No. 29 Tulsa at 10 a.m., Saturday at John E. Hoff Courts. The match has been designed as Tennis Club Day, where groups will have an opportunity to play on the court, get autographs from the Cougars and win a UH Price Pack.
