HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback to No. 31 Tulsa on Saturday afternoon at John E. Hoff Courts. The Cougars fell to 9-7 overall while the Golden Hurricane improved to 14-3 on the year.
"I give Tulsa a ton of credit," head coach John Severance said. "There's a reason they've won four Conference USA titles in the past five seasons. I was really impressed with how they moved in doubles and they're solid through their entire singles lineup.
"I thought we competed well at times, especially at the top two positions against nationally-ranked players," Severance continued. "We need to play the score better and eliminate some of our unforced errors as we get closer to the conference tournament."
The Golden Hurricane swept the doubles portion to take the early 1-0 advantage. Tulsa's duo of Bonny Davidson and Samantha Vickers led off play by handing Houston's Laura Ring and Liselot Koenen only their second loss of the season.
At the number one position, Houston's top tandem of Bryony Hunter and Giorgia Pozzan was able to claim four of six games down the stretch to cut the deficit to 6-5 before Tulsa's 69th-ranked duo of Ewa Svatkowska and Anastasia Erofeeva won the final two games to clinch the opening point.
The Golden Hurricane carried the momentum over to singles play, chalking up straight-set victories at the No. 5, No. 3 and No. 4 positions to clinch the win.
At the top two positions, Pozzan and Celia Fraser took 11 combined games off of two top-100 players while Maja Kazimieruk wasn't able to hold an early 3-0 advantage at the No. 6 position to snap her six-match winning streak.
The Cougars return to action for their home finale against UT-Pan American at 11 a.m., on April 8. Seniors Giorgia Pozzan and Laura Ring will be recognized prior to the match while fans will receive free pizza.
