HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team defeated the Houston Baptist Huskies to wrap up a four-game homestand at Cougar Softball Stadium Tuesday afternoon, 6-0.
Senior Donna Bourgeois (10-6) tossed a quality five-inning scoreless start, striking out nine while walking only one. The right-hander surrendered four hits to bring her season ERA to 1.60.
The sophomores powered the Cougars at the plate on Tuesday. Third baseman Holly Anderson ripped a three-run double in the bottom of the fifth and shortstop Brooke Lathan connected on a two-run bomb to right in the home half of the sixth to supply all five RBI recorded on the afternoon.
Both starting pitchers worked quickly through the first inning, before HBU starter Kendall Stiefel was lifted for reliever Jammie Weidert (8-6) to start the second inning.
Weidert and Bourgeois would work four-straight scoreless innings against each other until the Cougar offense opened up the game in the bottom of the fifth.
The Huskies threatened in the top of the third after a one-out walk put third baseman Holly Webb on base. Attempting to sacrifice her over, Rebecca Rademacher reached on a throwing error that simultaneously moved Webb to third. With runners on second and third, Bourgeois buckled down and got a ground ball and a strikeout to end the threat and continue the shutout.
While Bourgeois cruised through the top of the fourth, Weidert continued to keep the Cougars off the board, as well, and the game moved into the fifth inning locked at zero.
A two-out hit for Rademacher was negated when Bourgeois got the next batter swinging to send her hitters back to the plate for the bottom of the fifth.
The Cougars ran with the opportunity, putting up three runs to take the 3-0 lead. With one out, senior right fielder Angela Spittler singled to left center and was joined on the bases by freshman first baseman Stesha Brazil when she beat out an infield single.
Sophomore centerfielder Ashleigh Jones flew out to left to bring senior outfielder Katy Beth Sherman to the plate. Sherman smacked a line drive to a diving Mollye Mlcak at shortstop for another infield single.
With the bags packed, Anderson crushed a double to the left-centerfield wall to send all three home. Although the sophomore got caught up between second and third for the final out of the inning, the damage had been done as the Cougars took a 3-0 lead.
After throwing five scoreless innings, Bourgeois surrendered just the fourth hit of the game to leadoff the top of the sixth. Fellow senior Amanda Crabtree stepped in for the save opportunity and promptly went to work, striking out the next three batters to end the inning.
The Cougar hitters provided Bourgeois with run support in the fifth and shared the love with Crabtree in the sixth by scoring three more.
Junior Melissa Gregson started the game behind the plate, catching for Bourgeois before freshman Haley Outon was called in to catch for Crabtree, sending Gregson to left. Unbothered by the move, Gregson led off the bottom of the sixth with a single to left. Two batters later, Lathan connected on her eighth homerun of the season.
Redshirt junior second baseman Jennifer Klinkert and Brazil each tagged singles before Klinkert came home on a throwing error to lock in the final 6-0 score.
Crabtree threw two innings of shutout relief, striking out five of the six batters she faced to record her first save of the season.
