HOUSTON - Courtney Taylor registered 24 points and 14 rebounds to lead the University of Houston women's basketball team to a 71-59 victory over UTSA Tuesday night at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Cougars earned their seventh-straight home victory to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Taylor, a senior from Crockett, Texas, was 10-of-16 from the field, including her first 3-pointer of the season, and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Taylor also handed out three assists and swiped a season-high five steals.
Porsche Landry also carried the Cougars down the stretch, posting 12 of her 18 points in the second half, including eight in the final four minutes. Landry was 7-of-15 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. The Houston product also handed out five assists, marking the fourth-straight game with at least five dimes.
Lesslee Mason nearly missed a double-double, finishing with eight points and nine rebounds. Mason dominated the first half of play, scoring all eight points and pulling down seven boards in the opening frame.
Roxana Button added seven points and four rebounds, while Brittney Scott chipped in six points, six boards and four assists.
The Cougars fought from behind for most of the opening 12 minutes of the contest, as UTSA (3-5) drained seven first-half 3-pointers.
Down 20-13 at the 8:30 mark, Brittany Mason knocked down her second long-range bomb of the season to spark a 17-4 UH run resulting in a seven-point lead.
The Roadrunners battled back to cut the Houston lead to one nearly four minutes into the second half before the Cougars answered with an 18-5 run to jump ahead by 12.
Landry and Taylor helped Houston fend off a late UTSA rally, combining for all six of the Cougars' field goals in the last four minutes of play.
The Houston defense allowed the second-lowest point total of the season to the Roadrunners, while forcing 20 turnovers on 14 steals. The Cougars won the rebounding battle by a 47-36 margin and swatted seven shots.
UH shot 41 percent (29-of-71) from the field, including a 3-of-13 effort from 3-point range and 77 percent (10-of-13) from the foul line. Houston limited UTSA to 34-percent shooting (21-of-81) from the field, which is the second lowest mark of the season.
The Cougars take 10 days off before returning to action on Dec. 18 against No. 21 Nebraska at the Duel in the Desert Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.
