Women’s Basketball Stumbles Against Arizona

Kyndall Hunter scores 21 points, TK Pitts reaches career mark in rebounds on Tuesday
TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team stumbled in its final road game of the regular season against Arizona, 75-67, inside McKale Center on Tuesday evening.
The Cougars (7-21, 1-16 Big 12) won the battle on the glass with 32 rebounds while the Wildcats (12-16, 3-14 Big 12) recorded 27. Houston posted 14 assists for its ninth Big 12 game this season with 10 or more assists.
Redshirt senior guard Kyndall Hunter led the Cougars with 21 points, including five 3-pointers made for her fifth game this season, scoring 20+ points. Senior guard TK Pitts recorded 12 points and secured seven rebounds to reach 500 rebounds in her career. Graduate forward Amirah Abdur-Rahim ended the night with 10 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double with a team-leading nine rebounds.
Houston got off to a slow start in the first quarter, only scoring three field goals. Arizona led 13-7 after the first quarter.
The Cougars found their offensive rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 19-6. Pitts led Houston to a 15-3 run to gain a six-point lead. Following a 3:35 drought, Arizona scored its first basket via the free throw line. Hunter and freshman forward Jade Jones helped the Cougars back to a nine-point lead before a layup by Sumayah Sugapong at the end of the quarter cut Houston's lead, 26-19.
Arizona opened the third quarter strong with five quick points to inch closer at 28-24. Each time a team scored, the other answered, until Arizona went on a 6-0 run to take the lead. Junior forward Jorynn Ross went 2 for 2 at the charity stripe to give Houston a one-point lead. Arizona answered to regain a one-point edge, but Hunter made two free throws to put Houston ahead 47-46 at the end of the third.
Both teams exchanged the lead five times before Arizona used an 11-2 run to take a 61-53 lead. Houston produced a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to three. The Wildcats followed with an 11-3 run to build their largest lead at 74-63. With 19 seconds remaining, Hunter knocked down her fifth 3-pointer of the night, but it wasn't enough as Arizona held on for a 75-67 win.
