Women’s Basketball Struggles Early, Falls to Arizona State

Three Cougars combine for 39 points in loss against Sun Devils
TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team dropped its lone regular season meeting against Arizona State, 81-56, on Saturday afternoon inside Desert Financial Arena.
Houston (7-20, 1-15 Big 12) had three Cougars score in double figures. Sophomore guard Shun'teria Anumele, senior guard TK Pitts and graduate guard Briana Peguero combined for 39 points, scoring 13 each. Pitts led the team in rebounds with seven and is two away from 500 in her career.
Arizona State (22-7, 9-7 Big 12) earned its 22nd win of the season with four Sun Devils in double figures. Heloisa Carrera scored 23 points, McKinna Brackens posted 17, Marley Washenitz added 14 and Jyah LoVett rounded out the scoring with 12 points
In the first quarter, Arizona State went on a 13-0 run to take control and lead 27-13 at the end of the first quarter.
The Sun Devils used multiple scoring bursts, including a 6-0 run, to build a 49-27 lead. Houston answered with a brief 6-0 stretch, but Arizona State responded to take the 49-27 advantage at the half.
Arizona State opened the third quarter with a 7-2 run to push its lead to as many as 27 before Houston produced its most productive offensive quarter. The Cougars used a 16-4 surge to trim the deficit to 15, but the Sun Devils used a three-point play to take a 64-46 lead.
Houston continued to battle early in the fourth with an 8-2 run as Pitts went on to score six to cut the deficit down to 12. Arizona State found its offensive rhythm, outscoring Houston 16-2 in the final 6:48 minutes of the game to earn the 81-56 victory.
