HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team won its fourth straight match Saturday as the Cougars defeated Texas-Pan American Saturday by the score of 5-2 at John E. Hoff Courts.
"Today's conditions, with the wind blowing as much as it was, were not very good for quality tennis," said head coach John Severance. "This was an ugly win, but a win none the less. We are looking forward to having a nice, clear day tomorrow for our showdown with Tulsa. That match will be one of the few times this year we have been the underdog and the pressure should be on Tulsa to come in here and beat us, so I hope we come out and play hard with reckless abandonment."
UH got the match off to a good start as the Cougars swept all three of the doubles matches to capture the match's first point. The tandem of Lucy Forward and Laura Ring took the No. 1 doubles match from UTPA's Stephanie Willerding and Reetta Raty by the count of 8-3, while the pairs of Joanna Kacprzyk & Lynley Wasson and Vicky Simpson & Neila Starratt were each winners at the final two doubles spots.
In the singles portion of the match, the Lady Broncs earned points at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches as UTPA's Willerding defeated Forward 7-6, 6-3 and Luisa Cantu was able to earn a 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 win over Ring.
The Cougars' depth was once again a factor as UH was able to win the No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles matches to secure the victory.
Wasson dropped only three games on her way to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Malin Andersen at the No. 3 singles match, while Kacprzyk earned a 6-1, 6-7, 10-8 win at the No. 4 singles match.
At the No. 5 singles match, Simpson defeated Raty 6-1, 7-5 and Starratt was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Sarah Burton at No. 6.

The Cougars jump back into Conference USA play Sunday when they entertain Tulsa in a 11 a.m. contest at John E. Hoff Courts.
