Softball Dominates Friday Play at the Speedline Invitational Tournament

Plant City, Fla. - In the first game of the day on Friday the Cougars pulled out a one-run win in the sixth against the Michigan State Spartans.
The Spartans took the first lead in the top of the fourth inning. Natalie Furrow singled, Tiffany Wallace reached on error, Lacy Hauxhurst singled to center and the three were the players for the Spartans to cross the plate. Additonal hits for Michigan State were by Amanda Melton, Angel Merren and Lauren Pederson reached base on error.
The Cougars scored two in the bottom of the fourth, coming within one of the Spartans lead. Ray Ferreris started the short rally with a single, followed by a fence-hitting double by Kim Cote. With runners on second and third, Freshman Michelle Keith Hit a triple down the left line scoring both runners.

The pitching for the Cougars was begun by Jenny Johnson and finished up by Jamie Falco The Cougars are now 18 and 9 and will play Georgia State in their second game of the day starting around 2:00pm.
The Cougars carried over their winning attitude from the first win of the day against Michigan State to dominate the first inning scoring six runs and batting around to the top of the lineup. The hitting summary for the Cougars: Kristen Glowacz (2B, RBI), Ray Ferreris, Ali McDougall, Candis Turnbo and Kim Nesloney. Melissa Lynch also earned a RBI for her at bat.
In the third inning the Cougars produced their seventh run on singles by Nesloney, Leslie Seay and Riane Netardus. The score into the top of the fourth 7-0 Houston Cougars.
The panthers attempted a come-back in the fourth scoring three on four hits and an error, score 7-3 in the bottom of the inning.
The Cougars bumped the score to eight in the fifth as Kim Nesloney singled and scored with help from Netardus' sacrifice bunt and Glowacz single to right field. The Cougars still held the lead 8-3.
The pitcher for the Cougars was Allison Thompson. She threw nine strikeouts and only had three hits against. Thompson's record is now 5-2 with the win over the Panthers today. The Cougars finish round robin play tomorrow at 12:00pm where they will face the Maryland Terrapins. Single elimination play begins at 5:00pm on Sat and will include the top three finishers in each of the four brackets. Finals will be on Sunday morning.
In the top of the seventh the Cougars pulled out a end-of-the-game rally to beat the Panthers 14-3. The Cougars finish with 19 hits the highest in one game for the year.
The Cougars took their third win of the Speedline Tournament on Friday afternoon against the Panthers of Georgia State 14-3. The Cougars put up 19 hits in seven solid innings. Houston softball's record is now 19-9, the Panthers finish the day at 11-12.
