After winning series on Saturday, Cougars come up short in sweep attempt

TUCSON, ARIZ. – After winning the first two games of the weekend, Houston Baseball fell in the series finale to Arizona, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field.

Houston (22-29, 6-21 Big 12) freshman Caleb Kimble (0-1) took the loss after giving up the go-ahead homer in the eighth. He threw the final two innings, allowing just two hits while posting his 21^st strikeout of the year. Patrick Morris (2-2) took the win for Arizona (18-32, 8-19 Big 12) by tossing the last 4.0 innings and giving up just two hits.

GAME SUMMARY
Arizona struck first, plating a pair of runs in both the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead early.

After a pair of scoreless frames, Houston broke through with its own crooked number in the sixth. Savattere singled with the bases loaded to end the shutout bid, driving home Cox. Redshirt sophomore Xavier Perez drew a walk to push another runner across before senior Carsten Sabathia III used a sacrifice fly to bring the Cougars within one. Fields gave Houston the lead as he laced a single to shallow right field, driving home both Savattere and Perez to put the Cougars in front, 5-4.

Arizona tied the game in the seventh with an RBI double from Maddox Mihalakis before a solo homer from Joe Forbes put the Wildcats back in front in the eighth. The homer proved to be the decisive run as Morris shut the door in the top of the ninth to secure the win.

UP NEXT
Houston returns home for its final homestand of the season. After clinching the series in April, Houston hosts Rice in the final game of the Silver Glove Series at 6:30 p.m. CT Tuesday. The Cougars then battle Arizona State in the final weekend of the regular season at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, 6:30 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.

All four games will be streamed on ESPN+.
