Wilkins Powers Houston Past Iowa State

HOUSTON – Sophomore Jordee Wilkins posted a pair of doubles and four RBIs to fuel the Cougar offense as the University of Houston Softball team evened the series against Iowa State with a 6-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at Cougar Softball Stadium.

Freshman Rylee Michalak (3-1) threw 5.1 innings for Houston (15-7, 1-1 Big 12) in the win, giving up only four hits while striking out three to secure the victory in the circle. Redshirt junior Paris Lehman picked up her fifth career save with 1.1 shutout innings to close the game. Jaiden Ralston (2-4) suffered the loss for Iowa State (10-10, 1-1 Big 12), ceding five runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks.

Key Innings
2^nd | After a scoreless first, the Cougars capitalized on a miscue to take the lead in the second. Freshman Maddie Hartley then advanced to third on a pair of ground outs. The freshman then scored as Prudhomme reached on a fielding error to put Houston up 1-0. Freshman Ariel Redmond drew a walk to put a second runner on base and Wilkins drove them both home with a double to extend the Cougars' advantage to 3-0.

4^th | Iowa State got on the board with a run in the third, but Wilkins pushed Houston's lead to four with her second 2-RBI double of the afternoon that drove home Prudhomme and junior Mandy Esman.

5^th | The Cougars added another insurance run in the fifth. Freshman Madox Mitchael reached on a fielder's choice then stole second to put herself in scoring position. Mitchael later came around to score as Esman singled up the middle to put the score at 6-1.

While Iowa State shrunk its deficit with a solo homer in the sixth, Houston shut the door on any comeback, taking a 6-2 win.
