Coll, Arbolida Drive in Six, Cougars Drop Opener

Coll homers twice, Arbolida belts three extra-base hits on Friday at Texas Tech
Second baseman Harold Coll homered twice and drove in four runs while right fielder Cary Arbolida hammered three extra-base hits, including a home run, yet the seven combined hits and six RBI between the two seniors was not enough to down the Red Raiders who scored 12 runs on 16 hits.
Texas Tech (22-9, 6-7 Big 12) opened the scoring in the first inning with three runs before Houston (16-13, 4-9 Big 12) tied the game at three apiece after Arbolida recorded his first double of the game to score designated hitter Kenneth Jimenez with two outs. Center fielder Cameron Nickens tripled to score Arbolida and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
The Cougars put up a four-spot in the fourth inning when catcher Anthony Tulimero gave Houston the lead on a sacrifice fly. Then Coll hit his first home run of the game, a three-run blast that put the Cougars up 7-3.
The Red Raiders chipped away in the bottom half of the inning by hitting a two-run home run. The long ball snapped a 10-game stretch by the Cougars pitching staff that had not allowed a home run – the second longest streak in the metal bat era in Houston history.
Coll tied the game at 9-9 in the sixth inning on his second home run of the game, but the Red Raiders scored three runs in the seventh inning to take a 12-9 lead and held on for the win.
