Houston out-hits Texas Tech, every hitter records hit in loss
The Cougars (16-14, 4-10 Big 12) led off the first and second innings with lead-off doubles but were only able to score in the second inning, pushing two runs across the plate in the frame on an RBI single by third baseman Jake Rainess and an RBI groundout by shortstop Coby DeJesus.
Houston loaded the bases in both the first and third innings but were unable to score in either inning – not scoring in the third with the bases loaded and no outs. The Cougars had the bases loaded later in the sixth with a chance to tie or take the lead but were unable to do so.
Texas Tech (23-9, 7-7 Big 12) led by as many as 10 runs in the game and took its first lead at 7-2 in the bottom of the third after a seven-run inning – hitting two home runs, including a grand slam in the frame. The hosts poured on five more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Red Raiders took advantage of a season-worst 13 walks from the Cougar pitching staff.
Back-to-back home runs by corner outfielders Ace Reese and Jonathan French cut the Red Raiders' lead to 12-6 in the fifth inning. Reese and French are the first Cougar duo to homer in back-to-back at-bats this season and first since April 29, 2023.
A four-run sixth inning brough the Cougars within two runs at 12-10, but the Red Raiders scored two runs in the bottom half to increase their lead again.
De Jesus finished the game with a career-high four hits while Reese drove in a team-high five runs, tying a career high.
