In the bottom half of the inning, Houston (15-9) scored two runs after a lead-off hit by pitch and walk came around to score on a subsequent RBI knock by second baseman Harold Coll and sacrifice fly by right fielder Tre Jones.
The Cardinals scored three runs in the fourth inning on three hits and three free passes from the Houston pitching staff. The Cougars answered in the bottom half with a three-spot of their own. A double by center fielder Cameron Nickens looked to be stranded with two outs but a pair of walks loaded the bases before a hit-by-pitch, walk and wild pitch scored the Cougars' three runs in the frame.
Houston tacked on another run in the seventh after Jones reached on a strikeout-wild pitch, stole second and scored on Nickens' second hit of the game.
From the fourth inning on, the Cougars pitching quintet of arms comprised of sophomore Michael Benzor, freshman Diego Luzardo (2-0) and seniors Brendan O'Donnell, Jose Torrealba and Justin Murray (3) held the Cardinals to four hits, allowed just one walk and struck out five, all without allowing a run.
