Young bats give Houston the lead, young arms shut the door on Rice
Houston (14-6) scored a trio of runs late in the game to take a 4-1 lead and the bullpen held on, stranding the bases loaded twice to keep the Silver Glove at Schroeder Park for the third-consecutive season.
The Cougars used a towering home run off the bat of designated hitter Kenneth Jimenez in the third inning to open the scoring. Jimenez hit the first-pitch breaking ball to left field for his first Division I home run.
Houston pushed across the go-ahead run in the seventh inning on a double off the bat of left fielder Ace Reese. The freshman smashed a 3-0 fastball into the left-center gap scoring first baseman Justin Murray from first base.
In the eighth inning, Houston scored a pair of runs on an RBI single by pinch hitter Coby DeJesus and a bases loaded walk to Murray.
Rice (8-13) threatened in the fourth inning after putting runners on the corners after the Cougars extended the inning with a throwing error. But, right-handed pitcher Owen Woodward induced a strikeout to temper the threat.
The Owls scored their first run in the fifth inning on a bases loaded sacrifice fly. The hosts threatened again in the seventh with the bases loaded, but righty Ryan Dollar came out of the bullpen and threw three-straight strikes to punch out the final out of the inning and leave the bases loaded.
