Houston’s three-run evaporates due to defensive miscues
HOUSTON – The Houston Baseball team led 3-0 after three innings but dropped the first game of the series against Kansas State 5-3 on Friday night inside Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.
Houston (14-7, 4-3 Big 12) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after home runs by first baseman Justin Murray (first inning) and left fielder Ace Reese (third inning), but Kansas State (15-6, 3-1 Big 12) scored four runs in the sixth inning on two hits and two Cougar errors to take the lead.
Taking the hill on a Friday for the first time as a Cougar, left hander Antoine Jean struck out seven Wildcat hitters in his 5.1 innings of work. Jean allowed just three hits and gave up one walk but got tagged for three unearned runs.
Both teams had six hits, but the Cougars committed four errors – the first time since April 11, 2021 – leading to five unearned runs.

Houston and Kansas State square off in the second game of the series on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. from Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park. Game three of the series is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both games will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
