Tennis Drops Big 12 Opener to #26 Texas Tech

Cougars host #45 BYU at 11 a.m., Saturday
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Tennis program dropped its Big 12 Conference opener, 6-0, to #26 Texas Tech at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility on Thursday.
The Cougars (1-6, 0-1 Big 12) will return to action at 11 a.m., Saturday, to take on #45 BYU. Admission is free for all home Houston Tennis matches.
In doubles, Texas Tech's (8-4, 1-0 Big 12) Cristina Tiglea and Mariya Polishchuk defeated junior Maria Dzemeshkevich and senior Laura Slisane, 6-1. Sophomores Sophie Schouten and Sonya Kovalenko got out to a 3-1 lead before #7 Avelina Sayfetdinova and Metka Komac came storming back to win, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point for Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders extended their lead on courts three and six, respectively, as Sayfetdinova defeated Dzemeshkevich, 6-1, 6-1, and Kate Dmitrichenko took down senior Blanca Cortijo Parreno, 6-4, 6-1.
Texas Tech claimed the match on court five as Komac defeated sophomore Gabriela Cortes, 6-1, 7-5. Andreea Lila knocked off freshman Nina Skoric, 6-1, 6-4, to add to Tech's lead.
Slisane opened up a 3-2 lead in the opening set against #59 Tiglea on court one, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 6-1, to claim the final point before the rain forced the conclusion of the match.
Despite the match ending unfinished, Schouten took the first set on court two, 7-5, against Polishchuk.

The Cougars hit the road when they face TCU at 3:30 p.m., Friday, March 8, from the Bayard Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Houston then meets #30 Baylor at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 10, at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
Admission is free for all home Houston Tennis matches.
