PREVIEW: Houston Opens Big 12 Play Against #26 Texas Tech, #45 BYU

Cougars host Red Raiders 1 p.m., Thursday, and BYU 11 a.m., Saturday
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Tennis program begins its inaugural Big 12 Conference slate as it hosts #26 Texas Tech and #45 BYU at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility beginning Thursday.
The Cougars (1-5) face the Red Raiders (7-4) at 1 p.m., Thursday, followed by BYU (8-1) at 11 a.m., Saturday. Admission is free.
Houston is led by seniors Blanca Cortijo Parreno and Laura Slisane, and sophomore Sophie Schouten, who have each picked up three singles victories. Cortijo Parreno is coming off back-to-back matches winning her singles point.
Mariya Polishchuk (7-2) and Avelina Sayfetdinova (7-3) lead Texas Tech with seven singles wins on courts two and three, respectively. Polishchuk and Sayfetdinova have also recorded seven doubles victories with their respective partners, Cristina Tiglea and Metka Komac.
Komac and Sayfetdinova are ranked as the #7 doubles pair in the country.
BYU enters the weekend led by #71 Bobo Huang, who is 5-0, and Kara Wheatley, who is 5-1, in singles play. Huang and Kaavya Sawhney lead the Cougars with a 5-1 record in doubles action.
LAST TIME OUT
On Saturday, the Cougars fell to UT Arlington, 4-1. Slisane and junior Elena Trencheva fell to Francisca Veraga and Bruna Casasampere, 6-2. The Mavericks clinched the doubles point as Sarina Reinertsen and Ana Paula Jimenez defeated sophomore Gabriela Cortes and Cortijo Parreno, 6-1.
Houston's lone point of the afternoon came as Cortijo Parreno defeated Veraga, 6-1, 6-1, on court five.
SERIES VS TEXAS TECH
The Cougars trail the series with the Red Raiders, 3-4, with Texas Tech taking the last three meetings. The last win against the visitors from Lubbock came in 2005, when the Cougars came away with a 5-2 victory in Houston (Feb. 12).
SERIES VS BYU
Having only met them three times, Houston has never beaten BYU. The most recent matchup came when BYU defeated the Cougars, 4-1, in Houston (March 7, 2020).
