Jones homers, Cougars score seven-plus in sixth-straight
HOUSTON – The Houston baseball team won its sixth-straight game to start the season by sprinkling 10 hits around the yard on Friday night in its 7-2 win over St. John's from Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.
A night after showing off his speed, right fielder Tre Jones showed off his power with a 407-foot home run to center field in the second inning to open the scoring. Jones then plated the Cougars' second run of the game in the fourth inning on a single. The senior finished the night 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.
Houston (6-0) never trailed in the game, scoring in five different innings – including five runs over a three inning span from the fourth through sixth.
St. John's (1-2) pushed two runs across in the seventh inning, but Houston answered with a run in the eighth. The Cougars have scored seven-plus runs in each of their six games this season.
Houston's starting pitcher Antoine Jean (1-0) earned his first win as a Cougar by twirling 6.0 innings of scoreless work. The lefty struck out six Red Storm batters and scattered four hits in the outing.
As a team, the Cougars struck out a season-low three times and took 10 free passes (five walks, four hit-by-pitch, one intentional walk), causing chaos on the bases.
Jones and third baseman Alex Lopez finished with multiple hits, while Jones and shortstop Jake Rainess each had two RBIs.
