Houston surrenders four-run lead, suffers first loss
The Cougars (6-1) scored in the first inning for the fifth time this year on a two-out solo home run by first baseman Justin Murray. The senior has hit safely in 22 straight games, matching Brett Cooley's most recent 22-game hitting streak from 2002. Three batters later in the first inning, left fielder Ace Reese singled to drive in right fielder Tre Jones.
Houston added two more runs in the third inning when Jones singled in Murray and then stole second and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
St. John's (2-2) tied the game in the fourth inning on five hits before adding a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. The Red Storm scored three more runs in the eighth inning for insurance.
Houston had its chances down the stretch to chip away but lined into a double play with runners on the corners in the sixth inning after second baseman Harold Coll plated center fielder Cameron Nickens. The Cougars then stranded the bases loaded in the eighth after scoring a run on a single by sophomore Coby DeJesus.
In total, the Cougars left 12 runners on base after spraying 13 hits, 12 for singles.
