Cougars’ Comeback Falls Short Against UTSA

Houston looks to bounce back against UT Arlington at 1 p.m., Saturday
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Tennis program's comeback fell short, dropping a 4-2 decision to UTSA at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility on Friday.
The Cougars (1-4) dropped the doubles point as sophomores Sonya Kovalenko and Sophie Schouten fell to Aleksandra Zlatarova and Cassie McLay, 6-3, on court one. UTSA's Fatima Gutierrez and Ekua Youri sealed the doubles point as they defeated senior Laura Slisane and junior Maria Dzemeshkevich on court two, 6-1.
UTSA (7-1) took a 2-0 lead as it won its first singles match on court three as Baccino defeated Dzemeshkevich, 6-2, 6-1.
Trailing 2-0, the Cougars looked to make a push in singles as senior Blanca Cortijo Parreno captured Houston's first point on court six, taking down Magda Tuells, 6-1, 6-3.
The Roadrunners quickly answered back on court five to take the 3-1 lead, as Youri defeated Kovalenko, 6-4, 6-3.
Slisane made it a one-point match as she knocked off Zlatarova on court one, 7-5, 6-4.
Needing one point to win the match, Gutierrez sealed the victory for UTSA on court two as she defeated Schouten, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The Cougars open their inaugural Big 12 Conference slate as they host Texas Tech on Thursday, Feb. 29 at 1 p.m., followed by BYU on Saturday, March 2, at 11 a.m.
