PREVIEW: Houston Set to Host UTSA and UT Arlington

Cougars welcome UTSA and UT Arlington Friday, Saturday at 1 p.m.
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Tennis program welcomes UTSA and UT Arlington at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility starting Friday.
The Cougars (1-3) face the Roadrunners (6-1) at 1 p.m., Friday, followed by a meeting with the Mavericks (6-3) at 1 p.m., Saturday. Admission is free.
Sophomore Sophie Schouten leads Houston with a 3-0 record in singles, along with a 3-1 record in doubles with partner sophomore Sonya Kovalenko. Sophomore Gabriela Cortes and senior Blanca Cortijo Parreno hold a 3-0 record in doubles for the Cougars.
Fatima Gutierrez leads the Roadrunners with a 4-0 record in singles and is 4-1 in doubles with partner Ekua Youri.
UT Arlington enters Saturday's match with a record of 6-3. The Mavericks are led in doubles by Bruna Casasampere and Francisca Vergara with a 5-2 record.
LAST TIME OUT
Despite winning their third doubles point of the season, the Cougars dropped a 4-2 decision to Louisiana Tech on Feb. 12.
The Cougars took the doubles point as Schouten and Kovalenko defeated Olga Bienzobas and Alexia Romero, 6-3. On court three, Cortijo Parreno and Cortes knocked off Zoie Epps and Tiffani Nash, 6-2, to secure the doubles point.
Cortes added the only other point for the Cougars by winning her singles match on court five against Epps, 6-3, 6-4.
SERIES VS UTSA
Houston carries a 10-1 record into the match up with the Roadrunners. The teams last met on April 9, 2023, as the Cougars fell, 5-2, in San Antonio. Cortes and Schouten earned the two points for Houston.
SERIES VS UT ARLINGTON
The Cougars hold a 5-2 advantage against the Mavericks taking the last three meetings. In its last meeting, Houston dropped a 4-3 decision (March 5, 2022). Junior Maria Dzemeshkevich and senior Laura Slisane picked up two of Houston's three singles points in Arlington, Texas.
