Murray extends hitting streak to 20 games, longest Cougar hit streak since 2002
HOUSTON – The Houston Cougars pounced for four runs in the first inning en route to a 12-6 win against St. John's on Friday night from Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.
The Cougars are 5-0 to start the season for the first time since 2015 and have scored seven-or-more runs in each of their first five games to begin a season for the first time in program history.
Houston scored four runs in the first inning, the second-straight game scoring multiple runs in the first frame. An RBI single from first baseman Justin Murray scored the first run of the game and extended the senior's hitting streak to 20 games. Murray is the first Cougar since Brett Cooley in 2002 to have a 20-game hitting streak. Right fielder Tre Jones promptly tripled into the right field corner to bring home two more runs before an RBI groundout from catcher Anthony Tulimero.
The Cougars scored their fifth run in the third inning on a St. John's (1-1) error before tacking on six runs in the fifth inning. A sacrifice fly brought home one run before a pinch-hit infield single by junior Kenneth Jimenez plated two more runs. Then Murray poked an opposite field three-run home run to extend the lead to 11-2.
In the sixth, left fielder Ace Reese launched a 436-foot home run to right field – his second of the season. Reese finished the game with a pair of extra-base hits.
Houston's starting pitcher Jaxon Jelkin struck out six Red Storm batters including striking out the side in the first inning with runners on the corners for the last two strikeouts in the inning.
Jelkin then retired the next 10 batters he faced from the second inning into the fifth before giving way to Owen Woodward (1-0) who twirled 2.2 innings of two hit, three strikeout work.
In total, Houston's four pitchers struck out 11 St. John's hitters marking the first time in the StatCrew era that Houston pitchers have struck out 10+ batters in each of the first five games of the season.
