Houston swept Texas A&M thanks to Brown, Robertson extra-base hits
HOUSTON – Freshman Emma Robertson sent 1,394 fans at Cougar Softball Stadium into a frenzy in the eighth inning as she doubled and plated a sprinting Becca Schulte from first base, lifting the University of Houston softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M on Wednesday by identical 3-2 scores.Â
Â
Robertson entered the game with one base hit, but ended her freshman season at home with the most important base hit of her career.Â
Â
GAME 1
Catcher Kati Brown left her mark all over the Cougars 3-2 win in the opener, going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and a double.Â
Â
Houston (26-26-1) scored three runs over the first two innings and then held on for the win. Senior Kenna Wilkey earned her ninth win of the season and graduate Hannah Todd picked up her second save on the year.
Â
Brown ripped her 10th home run of the season in the first inning, giving Houston an early 2-0 lead. The Cougars plated their third run in the second inning on an Aggies (27-23) fielding error.Â
Â
Brown laced her second hit of the game, a double to the wall, in the third inning but the Cougars stranded a pair in scoring position in the inning.Â
Â
GAME 2
Designated player Emma Robertson played hero in eighth inning of Game 2.Â
Â
With one out and Schulte at first base, the freshman lined a double to the wall in right-center. Schulte never slowed down and motored around third to score standing up.Â
Â
Down a run in the seventh, Houston rallied to force extra innings. Lead-off pinch hitter LA Matthews singled to open the inning. With two outs, pinch runner Ja'Naiya Thomas stole two bases and then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, leading to Robertson's game-winning double.
Â
Todd was brilliant in her final start at home. Following a shaky first two innings, the righty settled in and retired 17 straight Aggie hitters on her way to an 8.0 inning complete game.Â
Â
With the doubleheader sweep, the Cougars ended the season 18-15 at home and .500 overall.Â
