
Houston Outlasts UTSA to Win Dual

Cougars defeat Roadrunners in tight battle
SAN ANTONIO – Behind a pair of singles matches that went the distance, the University of Houston Tennis program outlasted UTSA on Saturday and took down the Roadrunners by a score of 5-2.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 3-1 this season, while UTSA falls to 0-3. Despite not winning a doubles contest, Houston fought back to win five singles matches, including two that went to three sets.

On court three, senior Phonexay Chitdara collected Houston's first win of the day, coming out with nearly flawless scores of 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Gabriela Giraldo followed her with her fourth win of the season, defeating Laura Munoz-Baroja 6-1, 6-3.

After senior Mimi Kendall-Woseley (7-6, 6-3) put the Cougars out in front 3-1, sophomore Azul Pedemonti fought her way through a tough, three-set battle to win 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 and cement the win for the Cougars. Freshman Laura Slisane then added a win of her own (7-6, 3-6, 6-0) to improve to 4-3 on the year.

In doubles action, Kendall-Wosely and Chitdara suffered their first loss of the season, falling 6-4. They are now 3-1 on the year when paired together.

Houston concludes its weekend of competitions on Sunday when the Cougars travel to San Marcos, Texas, to face Texas State. First serve is slated for 10 a.m.
