Houston Drops First Home Match

The Cougars fall against the Eagles, 4-3
HOUSTON – The Houston Women's Tennis Team battled Florida Gulf Coast in a four-hour match, eventually falling to the Eagles, 4-3. This is the first match lost at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility since the spring of 2017.
In doubles, Sophie Gerits and Phonexay Chitdara defended their undefeated streak of the season, giving the Cougars the first win of the day at Court 2. The Belgian duo played Madison Gallegos and Sofia Perez in a tiebreaker, winning 7-6. However, the Eagles were able to win at Flights 1 and 3, stealing the first point of the match.
The Eagles got the early start in singles, snatching the first two matches against Ndindi Ndunda and Gerits at Courts 1 and 3. Minutes later, Chitdara grinded out her match, downing Laura Falceto 6-2, 6-3 at Flight 5. After this match, the junior improved to a 6-1 record in singles.
On Court 6, Stephanie Belovukovic defeated Madison Gallegos 6-2, 6-3. The freshman from Australia has been a steady anchor for the Cougars, holding a 7-1 singles record this season.
After Belovukovic was finished, the two matches left were at Courts 2 and 4, where Mimi Kendall-Woseley and Jovana Vukovic played two three-set singles matches. Kendall-Woseley gave the Cougars the point to tie the match at 3-3 with an exciting win, making a comeback in big fashion.
Vukovic played Sofia Perez for the decisive match at Flight 4, rallying but eventually dropping the hard-fought match, 7-6, 4-6, 1-6.
