NEW ORLEANS -- The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision on the road at Tulane to open weekend play on Saturday. The match with the Green Wave was originally scheduled for Friday afternoon but was postponed due to inclement weather.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tulane grabbed the early lead in the match with a win of the doubles point to open competition. Houston's duo of junior Sveva Mazzari and freshman Lauren Alter put Houston out to a 1-0 lead with a 6-2 win over Kyla Klier and Christina Sisti on court 3. The win moved the duo to 2-1 as a team this season.
However, Ivone Alvaro and Sade Atkinson defeated junior Ana Glumac and freshman Constandena Nicolaou 6-2 to even doubles, before Naz Karagoz and Elena Muller bested freshmen Tsveta Dimitrova and Cristina Rovira 6-4 to claim the point.
Houston fought back to tie the overall score at 1-1 with a win from Dimitrova in singles on court 1. Matched up against Karagoz, Dimitrova cruised to a straight-set victory, winning 6-3, 6-0. The win for Dimitrova is her fourth this season and second straight after also winning against New Mexico State last week.
Tulane regained the lead with a victory on court 5 for Muller over Nicolaou. Muller's victory came in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 to make the score 2-1. The Green Wave grabbed another point on court 6 when Sisti defeated Glumac 6-1, 6-4.
Tulane picked up the match-clinching point on court 4 in a 6-4, 6-3 win for Alvaro over Alter. Mazzari held a 6-4, 2-4 lead over Klier, and Rovira was locked in a tight 3-6, 5-3 match with Atkinson when play was halted.
