HOW IT HAPPENED
On the opening day of the ITA Texas Regionals, Houston advanced to the Round of 32 after a win over de los Rios/Serio from UT Arlington. On Friday, the Cougar duo of Mazzari and Dimitrova were back in action against a familiar opponent, Durkin/Ho of Rice. Houston fell behind early in the match and despite a strong effort lost to their rival's duo 8-2. Houston finished the fall season with a 4-4 combined record in doubles play.
Ana Glumac opened singles play for the Cougars with her Consolation First Round match against Ansley Boarman of ACU. The two traded games in set one, with each pulling off numerous holds and breaks, but it was Glumac winning the final four games of the set to take it 6-4. In the second set, Glumac broke Boarman's serve in the first game to set the tone for what would be an easy frame. Glumac finished the match 6-4, 6-0.
Glumac advanced to meet Laura Cabrera of UTSA in the second round where she was locked in a close match from the beginning. The pair went back-and-forth in set one, and the match became tied at five apiece. However, Glumac was able to hold serve and then answered with a huge break to take set one 7-5. Glumac left no doubt in the second set, cruising to victory and claiming the match 7-5, 6-1.
Glumac advanced to the third round of the consolation bracket where she will compete at 11 a.m., Saturday.
After an impressive first day of the ITA Texas Regionals, Mazzari was back on the court for her singles match against No. 143, Dani Wagland of Texas. Mazzari fought hard in the first set, but eventually fell 6-4. In the second set, Mazzari could not find a rhythm and dropped the match 6-4, 6-0. The freshman finished the fall campaign with a 7-1 record in singles play.
