Two Walk Off Wins Keep Softball Undefeated in Conference

HOUSTON - Back-to-back walk-off wins over East Carolina on Friday stretched Houston Softball's undefeated streak in the American Athletic Conference play.

The Cougars came back in game one to win 8-7 after trailing by one in the bottom of the seventh. A 1-1 ballgame forced an extra inning of play as the Cougars grabbed the walk-off win (2-1) in the bottom of the eighth.

Houston is now 19-18 on the season and 4-0 in conference play while the Pirates drop to 10-28 on the season and 2-6 in conference play.

In the 15 innings played today, the Cougars put up 19 hits against the Pirates.

HOUSTON 8, EAST CAROLINA 7 - BOX SCORE
Houston was up 6-4 heading into the seventh inning. The team knew they needed just three more outs to win the game, but ECU wasn't going to put down the fight.

With no outs, the Pirates tied the game (6-6) off a two-RBI double by ECU's Andie Johnson. Frome there ECU regained the lead (8-7) for the second time during game one as relief pitcher Shelby Miller walked in a run.

The Cougars knew they couldn't give up, so they made the best of their last chance situation. Bases loaded and one out, senior shortstop Selena Hernandez pushed one through the right side, scoring two runs to end the game.

Senior right fielder Tiffani McKnight opened the Cougars lead in the bottom of the second with a solo home run straight back, tallying her fourth HR of the season.

Courtney Klingler went 3-for-3 with one RBI against the Pirates.

Junior lefty Julana Shrum (7-9) picked up the win for the Cougars as she pitched 4.0+ innings, allowed five hits and no earned runs, four walks and two strikeouts.

HOUSTON 2, EAST CAROLINA 1 - BOX SCORE
After three solid shutout innings by both squads, the Pirates took a 1-0 lead off a solo shot by Abby Wynne, her second HR of the day.

Houston responded the same inning as Hernandez went yard for the third time this week. The game was tied at 1-1 for the rest of the game, forcing an extra inning.

Junior centerfielder Katie St. Pierre started the rally with a one-out double to right center. Crumpton followed with a walk off hit to the same spot, scoring St. Pierre to end the game.

Sophomore RHP Shelby Miller (4-4) pitched her second complete game of the season. She allowed just one run off three hits, one walk and recorded a strikeout, marking her best performance of the year.

UP NEXT
The two teams return for the series finale tomorrow at noon. Fans may bring their furry, four-legged friends to the annual Bark in the Park tomorrow. All dogs must be on leashes and the first 250 fans through the gate will receive a free Houston Cougars dog bowl.
