Cougars Drop UTSA to Begin Spring Season

HOUSTON - The No. 37 University of Houston tennis team opened the 2015 spring season with a victory on Saturday afternoon as they took down UTSA, 6-1, at the John E. Hoff Courts. Houston is now 1-0 on the season.
Head Coach Patrick Sullivan's team carried the day without dropping a set in seven of the eight completed matches. Houston is now 21-1 all-time against the Roadrunners (0-1).
The Cougars opened the afternoon with a strong effort to win the doubles point. Angela Lorenzo and Maria Cardenas took less than 15 minutes to earn a 6-1 victory over Irene Gandara and Daniela Garcia-Diaz on court two, while Elena Kordolaimi and Rocio Martin dispatched of Nicole Karaklis and Lina Hallgren on the third court, 6-2.
Houston's two nationally-ranked veterans took charge at the outset of singles play. No. 52 Kordolaimi was the first to put a point on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 court two win over Alena Shichkova. No. 21 Despoina Vogasari followed with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Jacobea Junger in the top flight.
Making her collegiate debut, Mina Markovic scored the clinching point for the Cougars. The freshman secured the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court four over UTSA's Garcia-Diaz.
With the match in hand, Houston was still able to earn two more points. No. 108 Lorenzo won the fifth flight, 6-3, 6-2 over Hallgren, and Charlotte Phillips took the sixth court, 6-2, 6-0, over Gandara.
UTSA's lone win came on the third court, where Karaklis edged out Martin, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-5.
Lorenzo's victory improved her singles record to a perfect 10-0 as a collegian, while Vogasari, the reigning USTA/ITA Texas Regional Champion, is 12-3 on the year.
