HOUSTON - Houston Softball was eliminated from the American Athletic Conference Championship dropping a 5-1 decision to Rutgers on Thursday evening at Cougar Softball Stadium. Houston closes out the regular season with a 32-21 record while Rutgers improves to 28-18.
Rutgers' Alyssa Landrith held Houston's bat in checks for the second time in less than a week as the lefty limited UH to just a pair of hits - both coming from sophomore Selena Hernandez. Landrith improved to 17-7 on the season and the Scarlet Knights advance to the semifinals and will face No. 1 seed UCF.
Houston was able to hang in the game as junior Julana Shrum deftly dealt with jams holding RU to a single run through the first 5.2 innings. With two outs in the sixth and runners on the corners, Houston issued its first intentional walk of the season and then Alexis Durando made Houston pay for the prudent move. Durando hit a grand slam off and pushed the scoreboard 5-0 in favor of Rutgers.
Diedre Outon came in relief for Shrum (10-7) and closed out her home career with an inning of hitless relief.
Freshman Jordan Rains took first base via a hit by the pitch and came around to score the only run for UH in the bottom half of the inning. Hernandez connected on her second single of the game to drive in the Houston native but Landrith (17-7) regained control of the game as she retired the next four batters to end the game.
