HOUSTON - The No. 38 University of Houston women's tennis team had another strong day at the Jason's Deli Collegiate Invitational, taking three victories on the second day of competition. Each of the four Cougars who competed notched wins on the day.
The Cougars transitioned to the Jack Hess Tennis Stadium on Saturday, where they competed mostly against opponents from Rice. The afternoon started with doubles, where Rocio Martin and Charlotte Phillips dominated Rice's Savannah Durkin and Liat Zimmerman, 8-1. UH's other doubles tandem, Elena Kordolaimi and Angela Lorenzo, fell in a heartbreaker, 8-7 (2) to Katherine Ip and Stephanie Nguyen.
Lorenzo was the only UH player to not face a Rice opponent in singles play, and she rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Louisiana Tech's Haley Ballinger. The shutout was the only one of the day in 25 matches at the Rice site.
Kordolaimi also smashed her competition, with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Rice's Allison Ho. The Owls were victorious in Houston's final two singles matches, with Martin falling to Ip, 6-2, 7-6 (4) and Phillips dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Durkin.
