Oct. 20, 2014 Waco, Texas - Despoina Vogasari capped off her great week of tennis in Waco with a victory in the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships. Vogasari won the final match on Monday morning, 6-4, 6-4, over No. 93 Natalie Beazant of Rice.
"I am very satisfied with my effort this past week," said Vogasari. "I could not have done it without my coaches and teammates though. The greatest feeling was having my teammates cheer for me every match and having my coach drive six hours every day to see me play."
Vogasari got off to a hot start in the first set, quickly putting the Leigh, England native in a 1-0 set deficit with a 6-4 victory.
The second set was as dramatic as the first, with both competitors battling to lay their claim to the championship. With the set tied at 4-all, Vogasari managed to hold serve, bringing the match to 5-4 in her favor and setting herself up for a potential victory.
As Beazant served to keep her championship dreams alive, she was unable to break down the talented Vogasari, falling by a score of 6-4 in the second set as well.
With her victory over Beazant, Vogasari becomes the first Texas Regional champion in Houston program history. Vogasari, the No. 7 seed at the event, did not drop a set in any of her six victories at the tournament.
Vogasari has now beaten five nationally-ranked opponents this season, including three ranked foes this week in Waco. She is the first Cougar in program history to beat three nationally-ranked opponents in the same tournament.
As champion of the Texas Regional, Vogasari advances to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. the site of the US Open.
"I am so excited about the trip to New York City," Vogasari added. "I am eager to get back to practice this week and get better."
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serve as the culmination of the fall season. This prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women.
Gaining automatic entry into the tournament are champions from the USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships held across the country, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl, and the consolation champions, doubles finalists, men's singles quarterfinalists and women's singles semifinalists from the ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, which Vogasari played in this past September.
