FLORENCE, S.C.--- University of Houston freshman Despoina Vogasari advanced to the third round of qualifying action Monday afternoon, after dispatching Ole Miss' Kristi Boxx in straight sets (6-0, 6-4) in round two of the Florence Open.
Vogasari is competing as an amateur and received a first round bye after earning the No. 3 seed in the tournament.
The win keeps Vogasari's impressive freshman campaign rolling, as her opponent, Boxx, entered the tournament as a two-time All-American senior and just the second player in Ole Miss history to garner All-SEC honors in all four seasons played.
"It was a great win for Debbie today, especially to do it in such convincing fashion and against a high-quality opponent," said head coach Patrick Sullivan. " She's been working very hard on conditioning with coach Higgins and she's seeing some great results from it."
"If her fitness and focus ever get anywhere near the level of her natural ability, she is going to be able to do some really special things in tennis."
The Athens, Greece native is just one of four international players remaining in the qualifying section of the tournament. A win tomorrow against 13th seeded Josie Kuhlman would earn her a spot in the tournament's main draw.
