HOUSTON -- The University of Houston tennis team closed out its regular season with a 7-0 win over Prairie View A&M on John E. Hoff Courts on Friday.
The Cougars improved to 18-3 and will now narrow their focus to the upcoming Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship, which will be hosted by crosstown- and conference-rival Rice at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on April 16-19.
"Today we worked and addressed a few areas that needed improvement heading into the conference tournament," said head coach John Severance, who tied former UH coach Cathy Beene for the most victories in program history with the win. "We played much better in the singles then in the doubles but we got our doubles lineup ready.
"We played pretty well and our confidence level is high. Anytime you finish the year with an 18-3 record, your confidence should be high."
UH jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage over the Panthers after sweeping the three doubles match-ups.
Sophomore Lucy Forward and senior Vicky Simpson defeated Melanie Brown and Bianca Simpson, 8-5, at the No. 1 spot.
Senior Jordan McCombs and sophomore Laura Ring teamed at the No. 2 spot to defeat Margaret Banks and Munashe Mukani, 8-4. The duo improved to 8-1 as a team and 5-1 in the No.2.
Sophomore Joanna Kacprzyk and senior Lynley Wasson took the No. 3 spot, 8-2, over Melissa Guerrier and Charli Cooksey, improving their doubles record to 13-5.
The Cougars followed by sweeping the six singles matches to clinch the victory. Forward defeated Brown, 6-0,6-0, at the No. 1 spot, while Wasson captured the No. 2 spot, downing Bianca Simpson in two sets to improve to 16-3.
Ring followed with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Guerrier in the No. 3 spot. Kacprzyk won, 6-3,6-1, over Makuni to take the No. 4 spot.
Simpson and McCombs took the No. 5 and No. 6 spots with a pair of two-set, 6-0,6-0, victories.
Friday also was Senior Day for the Cougars three departing upper-classmen, Wasson, Simpson and McCombs, as they took to their home court for the final time in their collegiate careers.
"I thought the win was special for them," Severance said. It gave them a lasting memory they will be able to keep with themselves for the rest of their lives.
"It was a nice tribute for all their hard work during their time here. All three of them did a great job for us all year."
