Baseball Wins C-USA Opener 5-1 over UAB

HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team won its Conference USA opener 5-1 over UAB on Friday night at Cougar Field.
With the win Houston is now 10-3 all-time in league openers and improves to 5-15 on the season.
Houston was led by pitcher Wes Musick who set a career-high in strikeouts with 11. His previous best was 10 Ks against UCF on March 24, 2007. Frank Corolla, in relief, added five strikeouts. The 16 combined strikeouts is a season-high for the Cougars.
Chase Dempsay started things off reaching base on a walk in the first inning and he would score on a double to left field by Ramsey.
Houston followed that up in the second inning, loading the bases with no outs. Matt Murphy scored the Cougars' second run on a wild pitch after leading off with a walk and Taylor White followed that up scoring on a throwing error by the pitcher. David Murphy scored the final run of the inning on a ground out to first base by John Cannon.
Zak Presley gave the Cougars a fifth run in the seventh inning. He reached base on a single up the middle, stole second and third base and scored on a single to third base by Ramsey.
LOOKING AHEAD
Houston will continue the series against UAB at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and the series will conclude at noon on Sunday.
Following the series, Houston will host Louisiana-Lafayette in a mid-week game at 6:30 p.m. on March 24 before traveling to Tulane for a weekend series on March 27-29.
