Baseball Wins Second-Straight 6-5 Over UAB

HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team defeated UAB 6-5 Saturday night to improve to 2-0 in Conference USA play and 6-15 on the season.
Taylor White hit the first home run of his career in the eighth inning to give Houston a two run lead, 6-4, and help the Cougars hold on for the win.
The Blazers cut the lead to one in the eighth inning, but Donnie Joseph and Chase Dempsay each struck out a batter in the ninth to end the game.
William Kankel started things off for the Cougars in the second inning, reaching base on an error by the third baseman and scoring on an error by the pitcher.
Houston added two more runs to their total in the fifth inning. With two runners on base, Blake Kelso reached base on a single to short stop and John Cannon scored. Zak Presley followed that up with a single through the left side to load the bases and Dempsay hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Taylor White.
UAB evened the score, when Luke Stewart hit a three-run home run off Kankel in the sixth inning. The Blazers added one more run in the inning when Jamal Austin scored on a bunt from Nick Crawford.
Trailing 4-3, Houston scored two runs in sixth inning. Codey Morehouse singled through the middle and scored Kankel who was walked by the UAB pitcher. With two outs, David Murphy scored on a wild pitch to give Houston the lead in the inning.
Houston will look to sweep the series when they return to the field at noon on Sunday.
LOOKING AHEAD
Houston will close out the series against UAB at noon on Sunday. Following Sunday's game Houston will play a mid-week game against Louisiana-Lafayette on March 24 at 6:30 p.m. before traveling to Tulane for a weekend series on March 27-29.
