HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team got its home spring season off to a good note Thursday as the team battled back to clench a 4-3 victory over Montana State at John E. Hoff Tennis Courts.
"It's good to get a win today even though it wasn't very pretty," said head coach John Severance. "We were outstanding in doubles and I was really proud of our No. 4-6 singles players, who did a great job today. I'm a little disappointed in our top singles players but we can learn from today and move forward. The good thing about the match is it showed our depth and that is a big part of our team."
UH , Lynley Wasson and Joanna Kacprzyk paired up to defeat Montana State's duo Stephanie Jasper and Missy Harris 8-4. Lucy Forward and Vicky Simpson came together in the second slot, to see another 8-4 victory against McKenzie Hilmer and Laura Villegas. The third slot was a breeze for Laura Ring and Jordan McCombs as they finished the deal in an 8-1 defeat over Ali Griffin and Andrea De La Torre.
The Cougars did not have such an easy time on the singles side of the bracket. Forward won the first set in the number one single slot, but Forward was not able to come through in the last two sets to fall, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. In slot two Laura Ring, dropped the match in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6, while in slot three Lynley Wasson fell, 6-0, 6-2.
Things turned late in the singles competition in which all three players came out on top to seal the deal for the Cougars. In slot four Joanna Kacprzyk beat McKenzie Hilmer, 6-4, 6-3 and at the No. five singles match Vicky Simpson bested Ali Griffin, 6-1, 7-5. In a crucial final slot Alix Young overcame Andrea De La Torre, 6-1, 6-0.
The University of Houston women's tennis team goes on the road to face Grambling State at 9 a.m. and Centenary College at 2 p.m. Both matches will be played at Centenary College in Shreveport, La.
